What's UUp Sunday, September 23?
Join Us Sunday, September 23
Celebration of Life 11:00am
Speaker: Amanda Schuber
Amanda has a 26 year history as a Unitarian Universalist. In graduate school she focused on Oppression Studies, and has been an advocate for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights for many years. She is currently studying for her Masters of Divinity at Starr King School for the Ministry.
In her “spare” time she travels the country working with UU congregations as a Beyond Categorical Thinking Facilitator, assisting congregations in examining biases in the ministerial search process. We expect a thought-provoking sermon, and hope that you will also be able to join us for the workshop after the service. (see FYI)

Beyond Categorical Thinking Workshop Sunday, September 23 from 12:30 – 4:00pm THINK OF A MINISTER. DON’T THINK OF AN ELEPHANT. Chances are you thought of both. And distinct images perhaps came to mind. In terms of a minister, what images came to mind? Was it a person of a particular gender, race, or age? Beyond Categorical Thinking is a required part of the search process for our congregation. In finding the person who would be the best match for our minister, we could potentially overlook or even let unrecognized biases keep us from knowing that a particular person would be the best match for us. Ministers in our faith who are people of color, bisexual, gay, lesbian, female, transgender, differently-abled, young, old, ethnically different, or of a different class—all of these credentialed ministers still face discrimination as part of the ministerial search process. In our efforts to find the best match, our congregation will host a Beyond Categorical Thinking worship service and workshop on September 23, 2018. Amanda Schuber from the UUA will lead the Sunday service and then facilitate a conversation where we will have a chance to examine how we can avoid letting prejudice become a part of our search process. This opportunity allows the entire congregation fuller participation in the search process. If you plan to attend the workshop, please send an email to office [at] firstulou.org and include your pizza preference, as we will also be providing lunch. Everyone in the congregation is encouraged to attend. Child care will be provided. CUUPS Fall Equinox Celebration Please join First UU CUUPs group as we celebrate the Autumn Equinox. This holiday marks the middle of the harvest cycle – when both the days and nights are of equal length. It is a time to reap what you sow, a time to give thanks to Mother Earth for the bounty she provides and a time to rest after bringing in the crops. Doors open at 5:30 with Ritual beginning at 6pm. Potluck after the ritual so please bring food to share.
Fresh Stop Market New Roots (www.newroots.org) or Barbra Justice (velma2720 [at] yahoo.com or 502-234-0607). Next delivery: Wednesday, September 26 Order deadline: Friday, September 21
Survey – For everyone!! An important step in the search process is to conduct a congregational survey, which will help the committee convey to potential ministerial candidates our accurate demographics, needs and wishes for our future. Please go to http://bit.ly/firstusurvey to fill out the survey. If you NEED a paper copy, please contact pamiddleton1 [at] gmail.com or talk to any of the committee members. Pam will send it to you by USPS, with a self-addressed envelope. When we receive it back, it will be entered anonymously into the computer data bank to be analyzed with everyone else.
Cottage Meetings The Search Committee needs your insights and observations! Results gained from the survey only give a snapshot of who we are. Cottage meetings are being scheduled so congregants have the opportunity to discuss in more depth what they want and need regarding our new settled minister. Let your host know if you are planning to attend OR just show up! However, we do need a count if you are planning on coming to the lunch on September 30. Please attend one of these meetings, and be an essential active part of the process to find a minister who is an excellent fit for First Unitarian
