In response to the question, “What can a single church like First U do to make reparations?”, the Rev. Greg Drumwright, our guest speak on Feb. 7, had some suggestions — support a sister church in the African-American community, support a Black Pride/Black History program for Black youth, talk to local African-American leaders and find out what they want, where they need help. Perhaps we need to create a Reparations Committee?
Currently, we do not have a person who is a lead organizer for on-going Racial Justice efforts and we need to talk about how we can organize our efforts, in addition to the leadership of our minister. Maybe we need to think in terms of collaborating with the other UU churches in Louisville so we don’t burn out, think KUUJAN (Kentucky UU Justice Action Network).
Meanwhile, we have many other worthy efforts supported by the church that deserve our on-going support and that undoubtedly would benefit from more people working on them … or maybe not. But let’s get together and talk about what NEEDS to be done, what WE want to do, and what we CAN do during these pandemic times:
Let me know if you can attend by emailing me at [email protected], or if you can’t attend, but would like to get on board.
