In a nutshell the bill addresses the following four areas:
- Defund the police and divest from incarceration
- Invest in new approaches to community safety
- Provide resources to build healthy, sustainable, equitable communities for all
- Enhance the self-determination of all Black communities
Watching the video of the unveiling, beginning with John Legend soulfully singing “We Shall Overcome” and including the voices of numerous others (black activists, scholars, mothers of slain children, legistlators, etc…) deeply inspired me to continue the work of fighting for racial justice. This is because it is a concrete measure in our fight against racial injustice – a beacon of hope and truth, a shining example of what our UU Principles stand for.
Please take a few moments to watch the video. If you feel inspired, please join me in letting our individual voices be heard by signing on as individuals who support this bill. I am asking our congregational leadership to co-sponsor the bill as a faith organization as well.
Blessings to each of you as we continue to work for justice during this historic period in our nation and in our world.
Love,
