• Foundation: How do I conceptualize the nature of being human and my relationship to the divine?
• Walls. What is the nature and purpose of my congregational community? And my role within that community?
• Roof. How can I be protected, saved, or healed in the presence of that which threatens life? How can I protect others?
• Windows. How do I understand my relationship to religious pluralism in our world?
• Door. What is my relationship to my religious past? What is my understanding of the unknown, of death, of endings, of beginnings?
• The Elements. What nourishes and transforms me?

The journey metaphor is powerful. It grasps essential elements of our
experience. We do harbor a conviction that we were made for more….Journey
language is the language of transcendence, of moving beyond. Our desire to soar
(and the experience itself—the ecstatic high) is readily fused with a conviction of
aliveness, a confidence of spirit. Thus our concepts of Spirit are inevitably linked
to our yearning for transcendence, crossing over, and reaching beyond. We feel
we are not what we ought to be, hence, we are not where we should be.

Home…home-making, as we explore it here, is a connective, creative act of human
imagination and a primary activity of the spirit. It is the creation of forms and
patterns which cultivate and shelter life itself. Homemaking and Homesteading
are activities that build a space where souls can thrive and dream—secured,
protected, relaxed, nourished, and whole…

We live in a time when the human family seems to stand on the threshold of
new possibilities both glorious and terrible. How are we attending to the need for
homemaking—for the creation of nourishing space in which to dream good dreams
and to cultivate the images that will nourish the future of our common life?
