MAM memo from 2/6/25

Dear First Unitarian Universalist Members and Friends,

What do we do in challenging times such as these?
Taking small actions can help us focus, calm and embrace our best selves. Educational opportunities can help us build capacity for justice-making as we encounter life situations.

Below are several opportunities for Building Capacity. Please read these and sign-up for one or two. BTW, the presence of Nadia Bolz-Weber (see #3) is already nearly sold out at Calvary. Item #1 is TODAY.
Building Capacity
Here are three possible events to increase our capacity as people who witness for a progressive faith:
1.  Opportunity TONIGHT, Thursday evening, February 6 at 7pm ET.
“The Revolution Will Be Streamed:
Approaches to News
for a World in Crisis”

This is a Zoom event to learn about media bias and what we can do about it. Click here to learn all about this focus, speakers and the event.
2.  Opportunity on Saturday, February 22 with an invitation from my friend and colleague Rev. Kelly Crocker of First Unitarian Society in Madison, WI to increase our ability to support trans, non-binary and other queer folks.
Dear MidAmerica Region Congregation,
We are excited to invite you to an upcoming workshop with Zr. Alex Kapitan of the Transforming Hearts Collective. Due to the generosity of an endowed fund, there is no charge to attend, and members of your congregation can attend in person or virtually by zoom. All of the information is on the attached flyer. We appreciate you sharing this with your congregation.

Come expand your understanding of what it means to be trans and nonbinary, learn how to tell fact from fiction, and find out how to help create safety for trans people and their families in this moment.  No matter who you are or how much or how little you know about gender diversity, this interactive and informative workshop will expand your mind, open your heart, and give all of us the tools we need to deepen our welcome and care for people of all genders in our community.
3. Opportunity for a wild progressive revival. Have you heard of Lutheran minister, Nadia Bolz-Weber? She is a fireball, hoot and a holler kinda pastor and the author of three New York Times best-sellers.

AND SHE WILL BE ACROSS THE PARKING LOT AT CALVARY EPISCOPAL!
I kid you not.

  Hang in There… You Are Not Alone
Lastly, Valentine’s Day is on the horizon.  I invite you to join me in writing five notes of gratitude to send to people on Valentine’s Day.
People who have made a difference in your life and heart.  It may be someone from long ago that you always meant to say thank you  It may be a recent moment in which someone said something or did something that touched your heart.  It doesn’t have to be profound.  Keep it simple.
Now….Three conscious breaths.  Relax. 

Let your mind meander for a while…..and allow five names to come to you.  People to whom you want to say “thank you.”  Then celebrate Valentine’s Day through gratitude.
