Memo from MAM – Feb 27

A Message from Reverend Mary Ann Macklin
February 27, 2024
On Sunday, I mentioned several definitions of the word Bible which has the following etymology: Middle English: via Old French from ecclesiastical Latin biblia, from Greek (ta) biblia ‘(the) books’, from biblion ‘book’, originally a diminutive of biblos ‘papyrus, scroll’

The Word Bible has several definitions including:

          1. any authoritative book
Dave Pelz’s Putting Bible

          2. the scriptures of any religion
In Hinduism there is a large collection of sacred texts including but not limited to the VedasUpanishads, and Puranas. The Vedas are the oldest and probably the best known texts.

          3. a copy of the Jewish or Christian Scriptures
my favorite Bible in this category is the Harper Collins Study Bible. If you want to learn about the Bible while reading the Bible I recommend this one.

I also mentioned Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the Revising Committee’s The Woman’s Bible. It is full of vim and vigor and a little bit of vinegar. I added that last part to see if you were paying attention.

Lastly, the podcast that I mentioned on Sunday, Sister Act, ran from 2020 to 2022. It has 51 episodes and I find them timeless and inspiring in their content. click here

In this podcast three American women of faith Hurunnessa Fariad, Dr. Sabrina Dent; Rabbi Susan Shankman present various perspectives on religion, resilience, and life. Centered on their personal experiences, their conversations helps humanize the vast American narratives regarding faith in this country.

Peace out. Love in, MAM
Reverend Mary Ann Macklin
