Greetings Good People of the Starship FirstULou, As a follow-up to Sunday’s Moment for All Ages about Nichelle Nichols who played Communications Officer, Lieutenant Commander Nyota Uhura, in the 1960s Star Trek: The Original Series, I wanted to share one more photo.
When I met Nichelle briefly seven years ago, I had time for one comment. I told her that it was wonderful to see the photo of her when she met President Obama. “Oh, he is such a gracious man,” she said, “and you are so sweet to remember.”
So, yes, not only Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of her biggest fans, so was President Barack Obama. Nichelle passed away on July 30, 2022.
Some of you asked about the main sources for The Annual Science sermon. I primarily rely on the following magazines: Science, Discover, Science News, and Scientific American; specific journal references are made within these articles if one is interested in further details. Gratitude to pianists Ethan McCollum and Jane Martin Buckley for Sunday’s music and Trish Ramey for the special images.
And here are a few sage quotes from Sunday’s sermon: Astronomer and Science Communicator Carl Sagan, may he rest in curiosity, once said, “Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality.”
Sagan also observed, ““We’ve arranged a civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster.”
Meanwhile, let us remember the Mars Rover “Curiosity” who continues its ongoing journey of discovery. Today, January 30th, marks Curiosity’s 4,194th day on the planet Mars in Earth Days—4082 in Martian Days.
Curiosity Self-Portrait Depending on where you were on the globe, NASA’s Curiosity rover successfully landed on Mars on either August 5 or 6 in 2012. It spent years crawling across the rugged terrain of the red planet, drilling holes, snapping images and conducting science operations.
May we lead with curiosity, Reverend MAM Reverend Mary Ann Macklin
PS Gratitude to the congregation member who provided a plausible reason why I was tripping over the pronunciation of “ChatGPT” when talking about Generative AI. Of note, I studied French in high school and my ancestors are from the Alsace region. ChatGPT has an odd ring to it en francais.
Let’s Visit I look forward to more folks scheduling one-on-one visits with me. I am learning a lot about this congregation and the folks who make it happen. Please email me to schedule an in-person appointment on Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday. I do Zoom appointments on Wednesdays.
