MEMO from MAM – Mar 5

A Message from Reverend Mary Ann Macklin
March 5, 2024
As I mentioned Sunday, transformation is our congregational theme for the month of March. It makes sense. The earth is beginning to transform as the spring season winks at us from the horizon. The Vernal equinox, Ostara, with its lively balance of nighttime and daylight will occur on March 19. And before that the rather irritating (IMHO) onset of Daylight Saving Time will begin on March 10, a fact that will make us rise earlier for church next Sunday. Ugh. Spring Forward everyone! Spring forward! Easter will arrive on March 31 and Passover will arrive later, April 22, due to lunar calendar adjustments.

Ramadan begins on the evening of March 10 and completes on April 9. The Islamic calendar is also based on lunar year so Ramadan takes place eleven days earlier each year relative to the Gregorian calendar. Early in Islamic history, Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, was designated as a time for fasting and prayer as a means of spiritual discipline.  And may we be reminded that day, as my UUMA colleagues stated in part, to “amplify the call for a ceasefire in Gaza, humanitarian aid for the suffering, release of the hostages and political prisoners, and political solutions that enable Jews, Muslims and Christians to live in peace in the Holy Land.”  Let us pray for such a holy transformation.

The month of March is also Women’s History month.
Who are the women you will be celebrating and honoring this month?
If you could sit down and have tea with four women, from present day or history, who would you invite? Gwen Ifill (she always helped me make sense of the world), Babe Didrikson Zaharias (athletic hero of mine), Frida Kahlo (a brilliant life of the party) and Eleanor Roosevelt (just because).

I’d also invite Catilin Clark to join us but she might be busy with March Madness.  click here

How about You?

Love in. Peace out. Mary Ann
