Important Announcement
 
We will meet for church at 11am this Sunday, November 17, in person and via zoom as usual. However, due to a temporary insurance issue, all other events scheduled are canceled. Church leadership is working on the situation and will update you as soon as possible. We hope to be back on track shortly.

YUM! Almost Pie Time! [Note: due to temporary closure of the church building, special pickup arrangements may be necessary, Stay tuned. ]
The Women’s Alliance Thanksgiving Pie Sale will be held after church on Sunday, November 24th. The cost of each pie will be $12. Many delicious pies have already been promised for the sale, so please plan to stop by and pick yours up… Just in time for Thanksgiving!
 
Poinsettias for Christmas Eve Vespers $15
Following longstanding tradition, the Worship Ministry again offers you the opportunity to purchase a beautiful red poinsettia(s) to be displayed at Christmas Eve Vespers. You can take it home after that service.

  • Online from November 17-December 4 – You’ll be able to order and pay online beginning Sunday, November 17, 2024. Ordering Info will be provided here once it’s available.
  • [Note: Due to temporary closure of the church building, In-Person Ordering may not be possible] In-Person Ordering November 24 and December 1 – See Bev Daly after church. 
  • You’ll be able to dedicate it “in honor of” or “in memory of” on your order form.
 
Thanksgiving Potluck: Thursday, November 28 
We plan to celebrate Thanksgiving with our usual First U Potluck Meal in the Social Hall. Doors open at 1:00pm and we’ll eat around 2:00. Bring sides, salads and desserts. Contact Trish for more information.
 
CLCM Food Drive
Central Louisville Community Ministries is again hosting a food drive to collect all those items that complete a holiday meal: stuffing mix, canned vegetables, gravy mix etc.  Food donations can be brought to church on Sundays and placed in the blue basket in the sanctuary this Sunday, November 17th,, or dropped off at the temporary CLCM offices at Calvary Episcopal Church across the parking lot from First U on Monday-Thursday from 9:30am-noon.

Holiday Assistance for Coleridge-Taylor Families
During the holidays, we will again reach out to our pre-school through grade 5 neighbors in need at the Coleridge-Taylor Montessori School, located at 1115 W. Chestnut Street.  Details coming soon! Thanks in advance for your generous donations.
 
Auction Event: 3rd Annual FirstU Christmas Party December 7
From Donna Corbett: For those of you who purchased tickets, please check your email for an email invite from me. If you missed the church auction or just didn’t know your holiday schedule at the time, there’s still plenty of room if you would like to attend.

The party is Saturday, December 7 from 5pm-8pm. Lot’s of food, drink, singing and a great time. The party will be held at my son Chase’s house, 215 E 9th Street, New Albany Indiana in the Historic Mansion District. Just text/call Donna Corbett at 812-399-2600 and pay at the door. Price $35.00. If you want to come but just can’t afford it — we can work something out.

CANCELED    Chalice Circles Sampler Session – Sunday, November 17
If you’re curious about the small group ministry that we call “Chalice Circles” and wonder if it’s for you, we are offering a no-obligation, one-time Chalice Circles sampler session on Sunday, November 17 in the Library beginning 15 minutes after the end of the Sunday Service. This session will last 90 minutes. Our topic will be “Gratitude.” This chance to “kick the tires” and take a test drive is open to the first 9 people who sign up. We’ll also keep a wait list of 3 people before closing the registration. We will add a second date if this is popular.

Speakers: Search Team Members
Kathy Rogers, Jamie McGloin-King, 
and Jill Sampson
The search team will talk about the history of Unitarian Universalist ministers here in Louisville and what we know about the different ways they did ministry.  Focusing through the lens of the past, the team will talk about what it means to imagine a thriving future and how it might look to live our values “out loud” in the process of hiring a new minister.

BIOs:
Kathy Rogers has been attending First Unitarian Church since December 2005 when she was drawn in by a performance of the River City Drum Corp’s Kwanzaa worship service. Kathy recently retired from the University of Louisville’s Kornhauser Health Sciences Library. She is spending her retirement helping her husband remodel his family home, geocaching, traveling, tandem bike riding, tandem canoeing, and trying to keep up with a dog, a cat and five grandchildren. Kathy is currently serving the church on the Care Team, Rev. MAM’s Transition Team, and as a server for First U’s coffee mission at UP for Women and Children.

Jamie McGloin-King is a member of First Unitarian. He lives with his wife and 2 daughters and a cat in Schnitzelburg. For fun he travels to see family and friends around the country. He serves as the Chair of the Worship Ministry at First Unitarian. 

Jill Sampson grew up in central Indiana but has been in Louisville now for +25 years although you can’t tell it from her accent. She’s been a member at First Unitarian almost that long and is currently serving as the Treasurer on the Board of Trustees.   She lives in a doglegged-camelback- shotgun house in Germantown with her spouse and two cats.
