“Eldering is a Quaker process of being present for another person. It is a spiritual practice that involves quiet guidance of another. The goal of eldering is to nurture the spiritual life of the community and its individuals I learned about Eldering when I spent three months at the Quaker Retreat Center, Pendle Hill during the late fall and early winter months of a sabbatical. While there, I became part of their community and learned about the Quaker way. I also spent time, learning about my Quaker ancestors and the legends of my long- long-ago ancestors; the Cailleach (Winter Crone or Winter Queen) is a figure in Scottish, Irish and Manx folklore. Also known as the veiled one, she shapes the valleys and hills with a hammer. She freezes the land and brings the winter seasons.”

In this worship service, we honor winter’s arrival and its invitation into the sweet territory of silence.
