Join us for a presentation exploring one family’s truth-seeking journey to uncover the medical neglect experienced by Mrs. Ada Doss Campbell, a former patient at Lakeland Lunatic Asylum (now Central State Hospital). Through research funded by the Kentucky Foundation for Women, this presentation examines the historical injustices and inequities surrounding her wrongful death while sharing the project’s overview and future plans. This community conversation sheds light on a painful chapter of institutional medical history and honors Mrs. Campbell’s story.

For more than 40 years, Dr. Renee Maltinaa Ann Campbells’ work has been immersed in her multifaceted identity as an award-winning international speaker and leader with Kentucky native roots hailing from Adairville, Kentucky. She is the daughter of the late Mrs. Mary Sears Campbell and Mr. Walter Louis Campbell, Sr. Life lessons gained during her country living served her well to support communities from diverse backgrounds, while actualizing a lifelong journey within the intersections of education, social work, and humanitarianism.

Her widespread leadership has afforded her numerous accolades and achievements that illuminate her humble core of intentional giving. Dr. Renee Campbell is a recipient of the 2022-University of Louisville, Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work and Family Science Fellow. Also, during 2022, she received the Louisville Defender Business and Professional Achievement award. She is a proud recipient of the Center for Women and Families, Woman of Distinction award. Dr. Campbell is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, Phi Delta Kappa International Honor Society and Phi Alpha International Honor Society.

Her work includes teaching experience at numerous Colleges and Universities. Dr. Campbell’s highly effective intercultural expertise has brokered connectivity among people of many languages and traditions. Dr. Campbell’s interest and passion extend beyond United State borders to Africa, where in 2005 she was appointed Sub-Chief by the Tolon Traditional Council in the village of Tolon, Ghana. In the Fall of 2019, Dr. Campbell initiated and facilitated the first educational scholarship program for 23 children ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade in the village of Tolon Ghana, West Africa, and in 2022, she established a health insurance program for 200 children in the village.

In December of 2021, Dr. Campbell launched of “A Voice” the Mrs. Ada Doss Campbell Story. This year marks the 21st anniversary of this truth-seeking journey that shines a light on the professional medical neglect experienced by her late grandmother, Mrs. Ada Doss Campbell. Mrs. Doss Campbell was a former victimized patient at Lakeland Lunatic Asylum, now Central State Hospital. The Kentucky Foundation for Women funded research provided a clear path to investigate the inequities associated with the wrongful death. Dr. Campbell established the Mrs. Ada Doss Campbell Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2021 to pay college fees for undergraduate students pursuing degrees in social work at Kentucky State University. The scholarship fund is housed at the Community Foundation of Louisville. Her proudest and most cherished accomplishments are her three children: Phillip, Benjamin and Tristan, along with her grandchildren: Ja Nice, Baylen, Ezekiel, Azaiah, Josephine, Aria, and Ada. Dr. Campbell considers herself to be a spiritual person who believes that individuals who see themselves as being successful have a responsibility to reach out and help others along the way.
